Sub-Inspector killed in Darjeeling, hunt on for GJM chief Gurung

Sub-Inspector killed in Darjeeling, hunt on for GJM chief Gurung”

Darjeeling: In Darjeeling, at least four houses opposite the deserted home of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leader Bimal Gurung were set on fire a little after midnight on Saturday.

By now, it is clear that Gurung has lost popular support in Darjeeling, said Anuj Sharma, additional director general of police (law and order). He was among those who had fled after the gunfire exchange between police and suspected supporters of Bimal Gurung in which one police inspector was killed. "We feel ashamed of it", he said.

Accusing Gurung of having links with Maoists and northeast insurgent groups, Sharma said the beleaguered GJM leader wanted to disturb the peace process.

Theresa May's speech proves she has learnt nothing from her disastrous election
Under party rules, if 48 Tory lawmakers write letters calling for May to resign, a leadership contest is triggered. That said, Ed Vaizey has claimed "quite a few" MPs want her to go.

Six assault rifles, 500 rounds of ammunition, pistol, gelatine sticks were recovered.

They were searching for the head of the party Bimal Gurung, who has been on the run since government prosecutors brought terrorism charges against him over a 104-day protest that crippled the region and left almost a dozen people dead. The state government has branded Gurung a fugitive involved in subversive activities, but he continues to claim that he, as GJM president, is the true representative of the Gorkha community.

Acting on a tip off, a strong police contingent on Thursday night started their operation to arrest Gurung who has been absconding for the last few months and reportedly hiding in Sikkim.

The officer, who suffered serious stabbing wounds to his head, face, and arm , is expected to make a full recovery. Sharif has been remanded into custody and is scheduled for a bail hearing in provincial court on Tuesday morning.

Tamang has been made the chairman of Board of Administrators of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration by the state's Mamata Banerjee government.

Life came to a standstill for 104 days in Darjeeling and its neighbouring hills district Kalimpong after the GJM called an indefinite shutdown on June 12 to press for its demand for Gorkhaland.

The Chief Minister is scheduled to attend the October 16 meeting at the state secretariat Nabanna.
