GM to launch new EVs, says future is all-electric”

While GM hadn't said much about its electric-vehicle plans before today, it has been clear for a while that the General has been working on a path to an all- or mostly electric future.

"General Motors believes in an all-electric future", said Mark Reuss, General Motors executive vice president of product development, purchasing and supply chain.

The auto industry has been abuzz lately as companies jockey to position themselves for full-electrification of their products, driven by regulatory changes and the possibility that major growth markets, mainly China, will ban internal-combustion engines.

GM said it intends to focus on further developing its SURUS, which stands for Silent Utility Rover Universal Superstructure, a fuel cell-powered, four-wheel steer concept vehicle on a heavy-duty truck frame. But it also said that "getting to a zero emissions future will require more than just battery-electric technology".

Newer lithium-ion batteries have drastically improved the capabilities of electrified vehicles and there are now dozens of hybrids, plug-ins and BEVs on the market, as well as three hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.

Some of the future electric vehicles will utilize a new architecture that sports a longer range than the Chevrolet Bolt, which can travel for an estimated 238 miles on one charge. The cars, priced at almost $15,500, are the first attempt by the Indian government to replace its half-a-million fleet of diesel and petrol cars - used by hhigh-rankinggovernment employees - with electric vehicles.

Pam Fletcher, who leads GM's autonomous- and electric-vehicle development programs, said that GM is planning efforts to expand the availability of fast-recharging stations for its customers. The company also pledged to start producing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles for commercial or military use in 2020.

Government mandates, including the latest version of the California ZEV rules, are leading to a rapid adoption of alternative powertrain technologies - even though President Donald Trump's EPA is expected to roll back the strict US fuel economy rules set to phase in through 2025.
