Thousands evacuated as wave of bomb threats hits Russian cities”

Over the past two days, more than 45 thousand people were evacuated across Russian Federation following a wave of anonymous and false bomb threats.

All alerts have proved to be hoaxes and the authorities have urged the public to stay calm, the BBC said yesterday.

The official RIA Novosti news agency quoted an unnamed source in the security services as saying 45,000 people had been evacuated Tuesday from 205 buildings in 22 cities.

TASS reported that the Metropolis, Afimoll and Gorod shopping centres in Moscow had bomb scares along with the Leningrad, Yaroslavl and Kazan stations.

Threats and evacuations outside the capital also were reported today, in cities ranging from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in the Far East, across Siberia, to Kaliningrad on the Baltic Sea.

Anonymous callers are reported to be making calls over the internet to emergency services, and usually naming several facilities with supposed explosive devices inside.

He added: "Each call is being checked. Police dogs will be used to track down the bombs", a source from an emergency service told Tass.

Bomb threats were also issued for Moscow's three railway stations - Kazanskiy, Leningradskiy and Kievskiy. Social media accounts show bemused crowds milling passively outside evacuated buildings, and there have been no reports of disturbances of public order.
