Petra Kvitova stuns Garbine Muguruza to set up Venus Williams quarter-final

Petra Kvitova stuns Garbine Muguruza to set up Venus Williams quarter-final”

After suffering an injury to her playing hand, the road to recovery has been tough, and she was yet to make an impression at the French Open or Wimbledon. "I know having these moments it's even better than before".

In the second set, Muguruza responded perfectly by breaking Kvitova in the opening game - but the lead did not last long as the world number 14 broke back.

But the two-time Wimbledon champion was satisfied with her performance, saying: "I feel great, of course".

"I didn't really play the kind of great players so far in the season when I came back", Kvitova said.

Sam Greaves said the test was a "key milestone" in enhancing the country's ballistic defense technologies, CNN noted. The U.S. military shot down a medium-range ballistic missile during a test off Hawaii, officials said .

"I'm not thinking like that anymore", she said.

Muguruza was so confident, so assured after her brilliant summer and looked to have too much consistency for Kvitova when she eased into a 4-1 lead.

And Kvitova never relinquished serve again, fending off three break points en route to her first last-eight appearance at a grand slam this year. "I don't really have the best ranking, but on the other hand I know I can play well, which I showed today".

The Czech pulled off an unlikely 7-6 6-3 victory against the Spaniard in what was her first big contest on paper at a Slam since returning from a knife attack in her home at the end of 2016. That was a really big game from my side at 6-5. Neither of them has been great in NY, with Kvitova reaching the quarterfinals once, and this being Muguruza's first 4th Round.

When the draw was revealed, the major talking point was the fact that the duo could meet each other in the semi-final. Also missing are Canadian Milos Raonic and Japan's Kei Nishikori , both sidelined with wrist injuries .

"We'll see", Muguruza said, smiling. After winning that game, Muguruza gained a little confidence and definitely gave Kvitova a hard time closing the match out. Up until the match point at 5-2, Kvitova seemed unstoppable. Kvitova went on to win that tournament but has not reached a major semifinal since.

She continued pressing the Czech and was narrowly denied from snatching a double break to put the set beyond doubt. "The world we live in is just shocking".

"Overall it's a very good tournament for me. To be able to come out here and do what she needs to do, to clear her head, it's such a lovely thing to see".
