New Zealand election ends in stalemate triggering coalition talks”

English said he would talk with New Zealand First Party leader Winston Peters in coming days and that his National Party, which won 46 percent of the vote, was in the strongest position to deliver stable government.

National and Labour had been nearly neck and neck in opinion polls, with charismatic 37-year old Jacinda Ardern nearly single-handedly dragging Labour back into the race after taking over the party's leadership in August.

The general election in New Zealand has ended in a stalemate with the ruling National Party falling short of a clear-cut majority to govern for the fourth time, according to official results.

Despite Germany and New Zealand being thousands of kilometres apart, both nation's elections are remarkably similar, using a mixed-member proportional system.

"There's conversations that need to be had and we're open to those", she said.

The win by the former Police Association president comes after Mr Dunne stepped down from politics in late August with polls showing him trailing behind the Labour candidate.

Ardern has enjoyed a remarkable surge in popularity since taking over as opposition leader last month.

"There's still a lot in play at the moment", she said. Victory for us was always about victory for them.

She told supporters she had called National leader Bill English to discuss the result, conceding neither of them would determine the election outcome.

New Zealand First, which has been critical of the privatization of state-run companies and investment by foreign companies, has laid out exclusive and populist policies.

Having worked with the Maori Party, Act and United Future over these past terms, English believed National knew the process of government forming and knew it had to be undertaken with respect.

In a media conference straight afterwards in the hubbub of National's election night party at Sky City, English went further.

Ardern expected the party would pick up more votes when the special votes were counted because those who enrolled at the polling booth would not yet have been counted.

Winston Peters, the party chief of the New Zealand First Party, however, refused to say which party he would side with.

Mr Peters said NZ First stood for more than the elite and his party had the main cards, but cautioned his MPs against commenting before that decision.

The NZ First leader doesn't give anything away on which party he might back in a coalition.

"This is going to come down to whether or not people turn out and vote", she said Friday.

She talked about contacting James Shaw.

"So many New Zealanders supported us. because through this campaign, we had the opportunity to share our challenging ideas about how to solve New Zealand's most pressing problems".

The Electoral Commission will publish the final result, which would also include ballots cast by New Zealanders overseas, on October 7.
