Getting up to speed on the Equifax data breach scandal

Getting up to speed on the Equifax data breach scandal”

"Equifax sells services to keep your credit and your personal information secure and so it's significant that they can't keep their own information secure", Hadley said.

Equifax is offering everyone free credit monitoring for a year, whether they were affected or not, which is a good place to start.

You can consider freezing your credit reports, but it comes with some downsides. When you plan to apply for a credit card, mortgage, or other loan you'll need to go back to each site and lift the freeze.

The breach affected about 143 million in the United States, as well as some people in Canada and the United Kingdom, but Equifax didn't provide a number.

Intel scores victory in fight against €1.06bn AMD antitrust fine
The lower court would have to examine on whether or not the rebates are actually restricting competition. After the ruling, Intel had tried to annul the decision or reduce the fine in General Court.

The senator isn't just speaking out online. If someone else goes to take out a loan in your name, the lender will not be able to pull your report and therefore can not extend the credit.

Richard F. Smith, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer said, "This is clearly a disappointing event for our company and one that strikes at the heart of who we are what we do".

When the Red Cross Blood Service suffered a leak previous year, one of the things they did particularly well was to notify all affected parties by email, SMS and through the media. Millions of Americans have bad credit because of mistakes from credit agencies, and it can ruin lives, stopping people from getting a job or owning a home or auto. Those people wouldn't be allowed to sue, join a class-action suit, or benefit from any class-action settlement. Equifax has also reconfigured its website to better direct consumers to information on the hack.

Over the coming weeks, we'll read a lot more about the Equifax breach as the forensic investigation continues. At first, Equifax said anyone who gets the credit monitoring service, TrustedID, must agree to submit any complaints about it to arbitration.

Petra Kvitova stuns Garbine Muguruza to set up Venus Williams quarter-final
After winning that game, Muguruza gained a little confidence and definitely gave Kvitova a hard time closing the match out. To be able to come out here and do what she needs to do, to clear her head, it's such a lovely thing to see".

Last month, Asset Finance International reported on the "stunning" increase in data breaches affecting companies globally.

According to a study by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, only about 16 people per year win in arbitration against companies.

While their services are essential to the US economy, the credit-reporting bureaus don't have the same regulatory oversight as the financial industry.

After news of the breach became public, it was revealed that three senior executives at Equifax, including the company's chief financial officer, sold nearly $2 million worth of the company's shares just days after it learned of the hack. The executives probably will avoid punishment because the company quickly put out a statement saying they were unaware of the breach. Responding to criticism, Equifax apologised in a corporate statement for any inconvenience caused by its support website or call centre, but the damage has already been done.

In Glendale, mandatory evacuations were issued for Glenoaks and Mountain Oaks, with a voluntary order in place for Whiting Woods. Firefighters sent additional resources to that neighborhood for structure protection and to assist with evacuations.
