A volcano on the popular tourist island of Bali could erupt for the first time in decades.

"The disaster mitigation agency said 48,540 people had fled and the number was expected to rise because more than 60,000 people lived in the danger zone", Agence France-Presse reports.

The increasing frequency of deep and shallow volcanic earthquakes, as well as local tectonic tremors, is an indication that magma continues to move toward the surface.

Another disaster agency official, Waskita Sutadewa in Bali, said people have scattered to all corners of the island and some have crossed to the neighboring island of Lombok.

The volcano's alert status was raised to its highest level on Friday and remains at that - level four.

Data showed that Mount Agung had 844 volcanic earthquakes on Monday and around 400 by midday on Tuesday, Devy Kamil Syahbana, a seismologist from Indonesia's centre for volcanology and geological hazard mitigation, said.

Thousands are living in temporary shelters after a 12km exclusion zone was set up around the mountain.
