When Is Perseid Meteor Shower? Where, How To See It This Weekend

When Is Perseid Meteor Shower? Where, How To See It This Weekend”

With the solar eclipse just over a week away and getting a lot of attention, there is another big astrological event happening in August: the Perseid meteor shower.

Normally, Northern Hemisphere viewers are treated to a spectacle of about 100 to 120 visible shooting stars per hour when the phenomenon peaks around mid-August - depending on the moon and the weather. The best time to watch Perseids meteor shower for the stargazers will be after midnight from a dark open space.

The full moon took place August 7, and the moon will still be about 80 percent full for the Perseid peak, reported. At most NASA says we could expect about 40-50 per hour.

The spectacle of meteor showers is caused by the entry of comets' remnants from outer space into Earth's atmosphere.

Venezuela uses 'excessive force to crush dissent'
The representative of the host country, Ricardo Luna , vehemently condemned: "What we have in Venezuela is a dictatorship". Venezuela has been beset by a wave of anti-government protests since April 1 that have left at least 121 people dead.

While the night of August 12-13 is the annual meteor shower's peak, higher than normal meteor sightings will continue until the shower ends on August 24. Earth passes close to its orbit each year in July and August, providing the best vantage point for seeing them.

"At 9:30 to 10 o'clock at night if you look straight south the brightest thing you'll see in the sky will be Saturn and with a good set of binoculars you will be able to tell it's not just a round blob - there's actually going to be a round blob with ears sticking out of it as the rings can be seen on both sides". It is best to avoid pollution when planning to witness such an astronomical event, so a countryside sky may offer a better view.

Although there will be fewer at that hour, "these meteors tend to be very long and long-lasting so it is definitely worth trying to see some of them", according to the IMO website. Thirty minutes is usually necessary to adjust to the darkness and to see meteors - if you are lucky you may see two to three per minute.

This weekend is the annual Perseid Meteor Shower, which is one of the year's most popular since it occurs during the summer.

Tropical Storm Franklin forms near the Yucatán Peninsula
The CSU Tropical Meteorology Project team is predicting a total of 11 additional named storms to form after August 1. The Atlantic disturbance has been downgraded to a 50% chance of developing over the next five days.

Typical raters for the upcoming shower will be about 80 meteors an hour but you could see as many as 150-200 meteors and hour in a heavier burst.

You'd never know it looking at our daytime sky, but right now, Earth is passing through the path of Comet Swift Tuttle.

The name Perseid is from the Perseus constellation, which is the area from which they appear to travel from in the sky.

According to NASA the actual peak of the meteor shower will be around 1 PM tomorrow, Aug 12, but since that's the middle of the day here in MI the night before and the night after will be our best chance at catching sight of the show.
