Rohingya fighters launch coordinated attack on police posts in Myanmar

Rohingya fighters launch coordinated attack on police posts in Myanmar”

The attacks are much larger than those in October previous year on several police border posts that sparked a bloody crackdown that forced nearly 90,000 Rohingya to flee to refugee camps across the border in Bangladesh.

The early morning attacks on at least 30 posts on the Bangladesh frontier in Maungdaw district were claimed by a group called the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA).

The fighting-still going on in some areas-marked a major escalation in a simmering conflict in the northwestern state since last October, when similar attacks prompted a big military sweep beset by allegations of serious human rights abuses, Reuters reported.

During the crackdown, thousands of Rohingya fled to neighboring Bangladesh, complaining of systematic killings, arson and rapes by Myanmar military forces.

She also said the Friday attacks underscored the importance for the government to implement the recommendations of the Rakhine Advisory Commission, which is headed by former United Nations chief, Kofi Annan.

The U.N. condemned Friday's attacks and said they confirm "the significance of the government's commitment to implement" the Annan commission recommendations.

The UN's top official in Myanmar, Renata Lok-Dessallien, called on all sides to "refrain from violence, protect civilians (and) restore law and order".

At least 12 people including five police officers were killed when Rohingya militants launched raids on border posts in the country's Rakhine State.

Zaman said that thousands of unarmed civilians including women, children and elderly people from the Rakhine State had assembled close to the border and were making attempts to enter Bangladesh.

Following its policy of "zero tolerance" towards violent extremism and terrorism, Bangladesh assured Myanmar of continued cooperation in dealing with these challenges, according to the statement.

The Rohingya Muslim community in Rakhine is referred to by many, including the government, as "Bengali" to suggest they are interlopers from Bangladesh.

They have spoken of their fear at being trapped in between security forces and the militants, who are accused of conducting a shadowy assassination campaign against perceived collaborators with the state.

Cornell-Duranleau was sleeping inside that condo when Lathem let Warren inside at about 4:30 a.m. on July 27, prosecutors said. Lathem allegedly decided that their first victim would be Trenton Cornell-Duranleau, his 26-year-old boyfriend.

Rakhine State is home to the Rohingya community of Myanmar, ethnic Muslims, who have long faced persecution in the Buddhist-majority country, especially from the country's Buddhist extremists.

The leader of ARSA, Ata Ullah, has said hundreds of young Rohingya have joined the group, which says it is waging a legitimate defence against the army and for human rights.

An emergency ward doctor said two Rohingya men who had been shot in Myanmar entered Bangladesh and were taken to a hospital.

The term Bengali is used as a pejorative for the Rohingya, to imply they are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

Madhurima Dhanuka said, "As Myanmar refuses to acknowledge Rohingya Muslims as citizens, it becomes impossible for the Indian government to deport them there, making the advisory infructuous".

"The government has directed to enforce the best efforts to stop any fresh influx", he said.

A total of 12 tries were scored in an 88-point fixture that exposed some serious deficiencies in the Wallabies defence. All Blacks captain Kieran Read described his side's sublime first-half attacking blitz as "surreal".
