During its decade-long stand-off with world powers over its nuclear programme, Iran repeatedly rejected visits by United Nations inspectors to its military sites, saying they had nothing to do with nuclear activity and so were beyond the IAEA's purview.

As part of the JCPOA, the US President must recertify Iran's adherence for the deal to US congress every three months in exchange for the removal of many global economic sanctions.

Bolton alluded to a rift within the administration over whether the United States should scrap the landmark deal, and said he was recently denied a meeting with Trump on the issue after staff changes at the White House. The next deadline to certify the deal is due in October.

Under the nuclear deal, Iran vowed to suspend its nuclear weapons program in exchange for sanctions relief.

"EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini also reaffirmed the bloc's staunch support for the pact, despite hawkish signals from the U.S. administration, the EU's main ally, of its unilateral desire to torpedo the multi-party, global agreement".

He pointed to differences between Iran and Saudi Arabia and noted that "we want resolution of problems between the two capitals through dialogue".

Haley's demand for increased access for IAEA inspectors in Iran came after she met last week with IAEA experts in Vienna, Austria. "It has kind of taken military conflict against Iran because of the nuclear program off the table".

Rohani said the United States will get little support from allies if it tries to back out of Tehran's 2015 nuclear agreement with world powers. A day before, Hatam announced on television an initiative to boost Iran's deterrence power amid concerns that the USA could take unilateral action even if other JCPOA signatories-China, France, Germany, Russia and the United Kingdom-stay onboard.
