Hundreds of people gathered at the entrance of an alleyway in southwest Minneapolis Sunday evening to mourn a woman who was shot and killed by police there Saturday night.

"We are so sad to report the tragic shooting of Justine Damond", the community's post said.

The stepson of an Australian woman shot dead by USA police is demanding answers after it was revealed the two officers involved had not turned on their body cameras.

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges says she's "heartsick" and "deeply disturbed" by what occurred.

Minneapolis police officers are equipped with body cameras but they were not on during the deadly shooting, CBS2's Kenneth Craig reported.

According to the Star, Tribune sources said that two officers in one squad auto, responding to the 911 call, pulled into the alley.

Justine Damond, 40, reportedly called police to report a sexual assault before an officer fired his gun from the passenger seat of the squad auto.

"Our lives are forever changed as a result of knowing her", he said.

Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau said: "I've asked for the investigation to be expedited to provide transparency and to answer as many questions as quickly as we can".

Neighbors said the Sydney, Australia, woman who was killed was a "spiritual healer" who led meditation sessions with dozens of others in Minneapolis.

Damond, a trained veterinarian who also worked as a yoga instructor and life coach, was planning to get married to her fiance, Don Damond, in August.

Peter Suffoletto, whose cousin John Ruszczyk is Ms Damond's father, said she held dual Australian-US citizenship. She reportedly held dual citizenship in both the United States and Australia, as her father is a us citizen.

Ruszczyk reportedly hated America's gun culture but still moved from Australia to the United States for love.

The woman's name was not released Sunday morning pending notification of family. He was away for a business trip when the killing took place.
