Mattek-Sands could be heard crying and screaming out for help even once the medical support arrived, with the crowd dispersing after it became clear the match was over.

Although Mattek-Sands is a doubles specialist with her partner, Lucie Safarovabut, she was a wild-card entry to the singles at Wimbledon.

"It's just awful what happened, obviously I'm very sad for her", Safarova said, speaking barely above a whisper after losing her singles match.
