More than 100 people died in the months that followed and many more sustained serious eye injuries from the pellet guns used by Indian forces to quell the protests.

Indian authorities on Friday shut down the internet in disputed Kashmir and sealed off the hometown of a slain militant leader a day before the anniversary of his killing by the army, which had fuelled further unrest across the Himalayan region.

Wani, a 22-year-old Kashmiri militant commander with the Hizbul Mujahideen, was killed last year on July 8 in a gunfight with Indian forces. Four districts of South Kashmir, including Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian and Anantnag are restive since the elimination of Wani in an encounter with security forces previous year.

Police and paramilitary personnel were deployed in strength across Kashmir and Internet services snapped to maintain law and order, officials said.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay condemned in a tweet the praises showered upon Wani and other Kashmiri militants by the Pakistan government and its army on his first death anniversary.
