Geraint Thomas crashes out of Tour de France

Geraint Thomas crashes out of Tour de Franceā€

The Welsh rider, who took the overall lead after last week's opening time trial in Dusseldorf, had been second overall at the start of the stage, 12 seconds behind team leader Chris Froome.

Briton Geraint Thomas has abandoned the Tour de France after sustaining a suspected broken collarbone following a crash in a high-speed descent during the ninth stage on Sunday.

Team Sky's race leader Froome stayed safe and extended his advantage in the yellow jersey to 18 seconds after contesting a sprint on the 182km stage from Nantua to Chambery, which featured seven categorised climbs.

He crashed twice while wearing the yellow jersey, on stages two and four, and on Saturday went straight into a hay bale after he and Froome took a corner too fast on a descent during stage eight to Station des Rousses.

Porte was taken by ambulance to hospital as Froome raced to pull in Romain Bardet (AG2R) at the front, which he did with 2 kilometres to go.

"He was conscious, it's reassuring, he is being transferred to the hospital", Pommery said.

Earlier this season the Welshman had to leave the Giro d'Italia early after a crash involving a race moto.

Froome will be relieved to have safely completed a stage filled with hazards, but the loss of Thomas could be hugely significant with Team Sky left weakened.

Payment processing giant Vantiv has reached a deal to acquire London-based processing rival Worldpay for around $10 billion. Vantiv will dominate the board with seven members, including Charles Drucker as executive chairman and co-chief executive.

On descent of Mont du Chat, the final hors categorie, Porte crashed and skidded across the road and into the side of the mountain wall, with Daniel Martin (Quickstep) unable to avoid crashing into him.

Twice former victor Alberto Contador was one of the big losers on the day from the 181.5km stage from Nantua to Chambery. "I want to thank the other riders, who did not attack".

Astana's Fabio Aru moves to second overall and was involved in one of the day's main talking points when he attacked Froome on the ascent of the Mont du Chat just as the race leader raised his arm to signal a mechanical problem.
