Volquez throws no-hitter, Marlins top Diamondbacks 3-0

Volquez throws no-hitter, Marlins top Diamondbacks 3-0”

Miami Marlins pitcher Edinson Volquez threw the first no-hitter of 2017 on Saturday in a 3-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Marlins Park.

On the day that Volquez twirled a no-hitter, Yordano Ventura would've turned 26. Volquez joined the Marlins after Fernandez's death as the result of a September boating accident at 24, but he was especially close to Ventura, with whom he played for the Kansas City Royals for two years. While Volquez tossing a no-hitter registers as a surprise given the difficulty any pitcher faces in amassing 27 outs of Major League Baseball batters without allowing a hit (let alone a starter with Volquez's inconsistent record), he's no Bud Smith or Philip Humber and won't rank as one of the worst pitchers ever to accomplish the feat.

Volquez needed just 98 pitches to complete his masterpiece, which is the first in major league baseball this season.

He entered the game with a meager 1-7 record and 3.99 ERA on the year. Locke was reinstated from 10-day DL, and Miami LHP Justin Nicolino (blister) went on the 10-day DL.
