Trump's Rule Changes on Cuba Cause Worry, Will US Businesses Suffer?

Trump's Rule Changes on Cuba Cause Worry, Will US Businesses Suffer?”

Trump also abrogated Presidential Policy Directive "Normalization of Relations between the United States and Cuba", issued by President Obama on October 14, 2016.

"We will not lift sanctions on the Cuban regime until all political prisoners are freed, freedoms of assembly and expression are respected, all political parties are legalized and free and internationally supervised elections are scheduled", Trump said on Friday.

Despite Trump's campaign pledge to improve relations with Moscow, there has been no significant improvement in foreign policy cooperation between the two countries.

"It is doubtful that they will trigger any move in Cuba towards a new governing structure or new leadership", said Shifter.

To raucous applause, Trump delineated his new policies, including a prohibition on American financial engagement with firms tied to the Cuban military conglomerate GAESA, and tighter rules for Americans traveling to the Caribbean island.

And in symbolism that will not be lost in Havana, his crowd included veterans of the ill-fated Brigade 2506, which in 1961 launched the failed USA -backed Bay of Pigs invasion.

However, even with an embargo and ban on tourism, Trump will retain one part of the Obama era Cuban policy; he will keep the U.S. embassy in that country open. While seeming like small rollbacks, they may actually have a large effect, as the Armed Forces Business Enterprises Group has a wide reach in the Cuban economy so that it is hard for USA businesses to avoid dealing with it in some capacity.

Prominent Cuban-American Republican politicians, including Senator Marco Rubio and Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, put aside any lingering differences with Trump to make the announcement, which is widely opposed by the vast majority of the American population as well as a wide variety of business groups, including the US Chamber of Commerce. The United States has long argued that people-to-people exchanges are one of the best ways of displaying American values and promoting democratic practices around the globe.

On Friday, Trump announced that he would revoke the "one-sided deal" the previous administration made with Cuba, blocking individual United States travel and all economic transactions with government entities, until Havana releases all political prisoners, legalizes all political parties and schedules internationally supervised elections. After his remarks, Trump signed an order directing the Treasury Department to make the changes.

"Easing of restrictions on travel and trade does not help the Cuban people", he said at an event in Miami on Friday. Grupo de Administracion Empresarial SA, known as GAESA, a state-run, military-affiliated conglomerate, owns nearly all of the retail chains in Cuba and 57 of the mainly foreign-run hotels on the island.

"GAESA has taken full advantage of the new US engagement". Port and airport fees are also exempted, allowing airlines and cruise ships to still bring travelers to Cuba.

The U.S. has a positive trade relationship with the island nation, meaning that America exports more than it imports from Cuba.

Donald Trump claims to want an end to the Castro regime and to encourage democratization in Cuba.

The statement said a "strategy aimed at changing the political, economic and social system in Cuba, whether it seeks to achieve it through pressures and impositions, or by employing more subtle methods, will be doomed to failure". He said that the US President's rollback would strengthen Cuban patriotism.

Trump will also exempt banking transactions and fees, allowing Americans to continue to rent private properties such as those offered through AirBnB.
