Tropical Storm Calvin forms off southern Mexico”

This is expected to be an above average year for tropical weather, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicting 11 to 17 named storms, five to nine of which would become hurricanes, and two to four of which would become major hurricanes.

The tropical cyclone will move inland along the coast of southern Mexico by early Tuesday.

The U.S. won't see any direct impacts from this storm. The MODIS image showed a band of thunderstorms wrapping about halfway around the southern portion of the circulation.

Calvin made landfall as a tropical storm approximately 37 mi (60 km) west southwest of Salina Cruz (pop. ~76,000), Oaxaca, at midnight UTC this morning, Tuesday June 13.

Tropical storm warnings have been posted over parts of the southeastern Mexican coast from Boca de Pijijiapan to Punta Maldonado.

The 7 p.m. advisory on Sunday noted the new tropical depression had maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1007 millibars.

Up to 6 inches of rain is expected to fall in the states of Tabasco, Morelos, Mexico and Michoacán.
