Storm Lashes South Africa, Eight Killed”

It is confirmed that an elderly man died earlier today when a wall collapsed onto his wendy house, while four others passed away in a fire on Simonsvlei Farm in the Drakenstein Municipality.

A ferocious storm killed eight people as it pummelled South Africa's west coast on Wednesday, forcing the closure of Cape Town harbour, triggering flash floods and causing extensive damage, authorities said. Many injuries due to flying debris were also reported by the BBC.

The Earth website, which describes itself as a global map of wind, weather and ocean conditions, provided a great view on Wednesday morning of the gale force winds lashing the Western Cape, bringing torrential rain to the drought-stricken province (see image above, or click through to the live chart).

The unit said that it was the worst storm to hit the Western Cape Province in 30 years. We are used to getting storms here in the Cape.

The cold front is expected to continue into Thursday, with no significant rainfall predicted for Friday.
