New Cyberattack Causes Mass Disruption in Europe”

Many organisations in Europe, US and India have been infected by a new ransomware attack dubbed as "Petya".

All Russian branches of Home Credit consumer lender are closed because of a cyber attack, an employee of a Home Credit call centre in Russia said.

The three groups were the first major businesses to be hit by what is believed to be a ransomware attack of the so-called Petya type, which earlier affected Russian Federation and Ukraine. The infected computers displayed a message in red type over a black screen that read, "Oops, your important files are encrypted", demanding a $300 bitcoin ransom from users to recover the data.

Computer systems from Ukraine to the United States were struck on Tuesday in an global cyberattack that was similar to a recent assault that crippled tens of thousands of machines worldwide. It is unclear who was behind the new cyberattack.

According to cybersecurity website KrebsOnSecurity, Symantec has confirmed that the Petya malware uses an exploit called "Eternal Blue" that is believed to have been developed by the U.S. National Security Agency and was leaked online in April by a hacker group that calls itself the Shadow Brokers.

Backup all your files, including documents, photos and videos.

According to Juniper, the malware does not just encrypt files on a targeted system one by one - it also encrypts the hard drive's master file table (MFT) which renders the master boot record (MBR) useless and the system unable to boot. As you can see above, the hackers were using a Posteo email account to maintain contact with victims. The ransomware affected companies in Australia and India.

An antivirus software can stop the ransomware being downloaded into your PC. DLA Piper said in a statement it was hit by a suspected malware attack and that it was "taking steps to remedy the issue". If you are already using an antivirus software on the computer, make sure it is up to date.
