Grenfell Tower response: 60 high-rise blocks fail fire safety tests”

The Department for Communities said in a statement that 60 high-rise buildings across 25 local authority areas had failed the tests.

This figure is thought to have risen to 60 high-rise buildings across 25 local authority areas.

A public inquiry has been ordered to determine how the unsafe cladding was allowed to be fitted in the first place.

The block is just an eight-minute drive from the Chalcots Estate where more than 800 people were evacuated by Camden Council on Friday night after cladding tests revealed they were combustible.

"We are now rapidly identifying buildings of concern: samples are being tested very quickly; fire inspectors are checking the safety of the buildings as a whole; and we have issued interim safety guidance", he said.

The mayor said: "Look, you've got to err on the side of caution".

Camden, where an entire estate housing about 4,000 people was being evacuated over the weekend, and Sunderland, share the greatest number, with five towers each. Camden Council said in a statement that the external cladding panels on the five blocks at the estate did not satisfy their independent laboratory testing and that they would immediately begin preparing to remove them.

The cladding on the buildings is similar to that of west London's Grenfell Tower, where at least 79 people died last week when a fridge-freezer sparked a blaze that consumed the building and the covering was blamed for accelerating the spread of the fire.

Residents challenged Georgia Gould, leader of the council, yesterday over plans for evacuation, and about 200 people were refusing to leave the tower blocks until they were told that they would have somewhere to go.
