China likely to build military base in Pakistan, claims United States report

China likely to build military base in Pakistan, claims United States report”

Asserting that China was the world's fourth largest arms supplier with more than Dollars 20 billion in sales, the Pentagon said that the Asian-Pacific countries, primarily Pakistan accounted for USD 9 billion in Chinese arms exports from 2011 to 2015.

China's military modernisation programme is now focussed on supporting missions beyond its territorial limits and is likely to set up bases in "friendly" countries like Pakistan, says the latest report from the U.S. Department of Defense.

China is expanding its access to foreign ports so as to sustain deployments in the Mediterranean Sea, and the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, according to a U.S. Department of Defense report.

"China uses its cyber capabilities to support intelligence collection against USA diplomatic, economic, and defense industrial base sectors". The Pentagon report said that this region accounted for $9 billion of the more than $20 billion in Chinese arms exports from 2011 to 2015. China has used coercive tactics, such as the use of law enforcement vessels and its maritime militia, to enforce maritime claims and advance its interests in ways that are calculated to fall below the threshold of provoking conflict, states the report. Other major Asia-Pacific customers of Chinese military equipment include Bangladesh and Burma, it said.

OECD Says Global Growth 'Better But Not Good Enough
The world economy is projected to grow 3.5 percent this year, the Paris-based think tank said in its semi-annual Global Economic Outlook report.

It said that as of late previous year, China was building 24 fighter-sized hangars, fixed-weapons positions, barracks, administration buildings and communication facilities on each of the three largest outposts.

"Once all these facilities are complete, China will have the capacity to house up to three regiments of fighters in the Spratly Islands", the Pentagon said.

Hua said: "We have noted the report released by the USA which made irresponsible remarks about China's national defense development in disregard of the facts". That is higher than China's official defense budget figure of 954.35 billion yuan ($140.4 billion).

China started building its first overseas military base in February a year ago in the small nation of Djibouti, just a few kilometers from Camp Lemonnier, the U.S. base in the Horn of Africa nation. "The two countries increased military exchanges since previous year despite continued border tensions", the report added.

China's arms sales are conducted via state-run export organizations that seek primarily to generate profits and offset defense-related research and development costs.

On the use of coercion, the Pentagon report noted that China engages in punitive trade policies and other measures to deter opposition to its actions. It's worth noting that the figure assessed by the Pentagon is almost $40 billion more than the Chinese government claims to allot to military expenditures.

"Tensions remain with India along the shared 4,057-km border over Arunachal Pradesh, which China asserts is part of Tibet and therefore part of China, and over the Aksai Chin region at the western end of the Tibetan Plateau, despite growing China-India political and economic relations".
