BC Liberals question NDP's ability to to govern

BC Liberals question NDP's ability to to govern”

British Columbia's Liberals are bracing for defeat this Thursday after 16 years in office, but they want to reform the province's campaign finance laws as a final political act.

Surrey-White Rock's newest BC Liberal MLA acknowledged Friday that criticism regarding the similarity between her party's throne-speech promises and those put forward by the opposition NDP and Green parties were "things that we were all hearing on the doorstep".

Because it was not a confidence motion, the Liberal government survives even though its legislation was defeated.

The NDP and Greens have an agreement to combine their seats to out vote the Liberals on matters of confidence, which includes the throne speech.

"The only reason the Speaker concerns would have any merit is if the B.C. Liberals have been deliberately misleading British Columbians about their willingness to work across party lines. If the B.C. Liberals are being honest with British Columbians when they say they want to avoid an election and work across party lines, then we will have one of the most productive legislatures in history".

De Jong said he does not intend to signal to the Lieutenant Governor that a new election should be called, but only to inform all MLAs of the situation they face.

In Thursday's throne speech, the Liberals promised to not only ban corporate and union donations, but also impose a limit for individuals, ban foreign donations and donations from other provincial or federal parties, ban loans from anyone other than a bank or credit union, and apply the reforms to municipal elections as well.

Clark in response urged MLAs to vote in favour of her throne speech, calling it a honest effort to take the campaign ideas of the opposition parties and enact them through her government.

Green Leader Andrew Weaver appealed in a statement for the Liberals to provide a Speaker to a future NDP government.

The opposition parties are refusing to even read new legislation, and the governing Liberals have been unwilling to expedite a confidence vote. When that happens, Premier Christy Clark will be forced to offer her resignation to Lt. -Gov.

Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna feeling 'weird,' mentally off
Escobar promptly scored on a Whit Merrifield sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1 and the Royals never trailed after that. They don't have the budget to retain all of those free agents to-be, so Kansas City would be a greatly diminished team.

Hypothetically, John Horgan could become the premier as early as this week, but Moscrop says it's more likely he'll be sworn in next week.

Every single member of the House has the chance to speak about the Throne Speech for 30 minutes. De Jong had said, regardless, the Liberals would commit to facing a confidence vote Thursday. It does look a little screwy when the opposition parties defeat the very bills they plan to introduce once they assume the reins of power.

"I think members deserve to know, not from me but from a more authoritative source, what the rules are", he said.

From a purely strategic perspective, I think the NDP-Green alliance has been very well put together, giving the Greens a modicum of independence while potentially allowing the NDP to govern for a decent length of time.
