Apple unveils 'HomePod' speaker, first new product in years

While Apple played up the music aspects of the HomePod in its presentation, the device will be capable of performing the everyday tasks that competing smart speaker devices perform such as retrieving the weather or reading news headlines. Making the most of it will require a subscription to Apple's own music streaming service, which runs $10 to $15 per month and has attracted 27 million subscribers so far. The HomePod speaker has six built-in microphones compared to 1 on Siri, so response rate should be much better. Apple CEO Tim Cook kicked off the five-day WWDC that runs through June 9. The HomePod is planned to launch in December for United States dollars 349 in the US, UK and Australia. The HomePod, which has been pegged as Apple's answer to Amazon Echo and Google Home, will begin shipping to customers this December.

Amazon and Google's existing speakers have proved popular with consumers since the Echo launched in the United Kingdom in 2016 and Home earlier this year. The research firm eMarketer says than 35 million people in the US are expected to use a voice-activated speaker at least once a month this year, more than double its estimate from last year.

Apple HomePod is the smart speaker that wants to be at the center of your home audio experience, and that's great news for iPhone and iPad users. It unveiled the Apple Watch in September 2014. Commenting on the sound quality, Apple marketing director Phil Schiller stated confidently; "You don't have to know what any of that is; just know that it sounds incredible".

Some industry insiders, however, note that Apple will be under more pressure to improve the computing smarts of its Siri software in the face of offerings from rivals Google and Amazon.

Apple also used its annual developer meeting in San Jose, California - its largest ever with some 5,000 people attending - to offer hints about so-called augmented reality technology.

Additional apps will also be able to interact with Siri, including Apple Pay for peer-to-peer payments, WeChat, and OmniFocus 2.
