US extends 'temporary protected status' to Haitians until Januaryā€¯

Tiffany Wheatland-Disu, community outreach manager at the New York Immigration Coalition, said an assessment of conditions in December supports "a full 18-month extension".

Others say it's not enough.

Thousands of Haitians that are under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in the United States since the 2010 quake in the island received on Monday a six month reprieve, in what many advocates and activists in South Florida fear is the last extension of the immigration program.

The Haitians were facing orders to return home from July 23 if the Department of Homeland Security did not renew their temporary protected status, granted after a magnitude 7 quake destroyed much of the capital Port-au-Prince on January 12, 2010. He has been in the US for 18 years and has two USA -born children in school. It allowed Haitian nationals to stay in the USA because of adverse conditions in their homeland. Alcee Hastings and Ted Deutch and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz denounced, at least in part. There are an estimated 58,000 who have TPS status nationwide, with Florida having the most. The Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Palm Beach area had the most in the nation, 197,000.

Performing at the same venue President Donald Trump visited on a campaign stop in September, the Haitian-born artist used his time onstage to ask the Trump administration to extend Haiti's Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program.

DHS's announcement extending Haiti's TPS designation for only six months (rather than the usual, appropriate 18 months) sends very mixed signals and omits extremely significant facts.

Rebel Wilson's defamation trial against publisher begins
She even smirked when the judges' associate revealed one of the jury contestants was, indeed, a magazine editor. Her dreams were shattered when Bauer Media published "grubby articles " that defamed her, he said.

"As we have stated numerous times, Haiti is in no position to safely absorb an additional 50,000 persons, nor to make up for the remittances that would be curtailed", the group said in a statement.

"I believe there are indications that Haiti - if its recovery from the 2010 quake continues at pace - may not warrant further TPS extension past January 2018", Kelly said.

His union and others in the Orlando hospitality industry are planning a rally near Universal Studios to demand that the Trump administration grant a long-term TPS renewal.

The designation only applies to those living in the United States since the designation.

The department said they feel encouraged by what they say is Haiti's progress since an natural disaster that devastated the country back on January 12, 2010.

The Homeland Security Department denied that criminal information would be used to determine whether the Haitians could stay in the United States, saying that department Secretary John Kelly simply wanted more information about program participants. Despite concluding that "t$3 he institutional capacity of the Haitian [g] overnment to respond to the lingering effects of the quake remains weak", USCIS believes that conditions have sufficiently improved and that it is no longer in the U.S.' national interest to extend the TPS designation.

This inadequate six month extension, served up with a threat of eventual deportation, is a bitter disappointment - a poisoned apple.

"Progress has been made in Haiti, but the country is still far from recovered. And at some point there has to be some movement on sending people back to their home countries".

Wasserman Schultz added similar thoughts. "If it's only six months, it is clear that their decision is to terminate it, which would be a disaster", she said. "The move appears to be created to allow families time to voluntarily return to Haiti or prepare to leave the country".

The Post reports that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is still finalizing the details of the decision.

"If we're deporting people to a country, then there's no excuse for continuing TPS for a certain subgroup of illegal immigrants", said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, which advocates for lower levels of immigration. "I will continue to work with advocates, the Administration and other lawmakers to extend this deadline as quickly as possible. Haiti is clearly such a case".
