Turkey's Erdogan accuses Israel of massacring Palestinians

Turkey's Erdogan accuses Israel of massacring Palestinians”

On Monday, Erdogan, speaking at the Al-Quds Forum in Istanbul, urged more Muslims to visit the Al-Aqsa mosque - one of the major religious sites of Muslims, located on a hill called Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

In an address to Israeli authorities, Erdogan said: "We will not allow the adhan to be stopped in Al-Quds".

Turkey has the highest numbers of visitors to Jerusalem from among all other Muslim countries - around 26,000 annually - and Erdogan asked why "hundreds of thousands" of Muslims aren't visiting.

"I do not agree with what Hitler did and I also do not agree with what Israel did in Gaza", Erdogan said in a rare interview with Israel television.

Former foreign ministry director General Dore Gold told Israel Radio that the country must respond forcefully to any "problematic statements by the Turkish leadership". Palestinians want to make the holy city their capital after granted full statehood status.

Israel occupied the West Bank and east Jerusalem al-Quds in 1967. "We will keep making efforts for Quds to turn into a city of peace", he added.

The Turkish president also spoke out against the possibility of moving the United States embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, warning that even "relocating a stone" in the Holy City could have serious implications.

Under the reconciliation deal negotiated a year ago, Ankara and Tel Aviv normalised diplomatic relations and appointed new ambassadors, with Israel pledging to pay $20m (£15.5m) of compensation to the Mavi Marmara victims' families, and allowing Turkey to carry out humanitarian projects in Gaza.

In 2013, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologised to Erdogan over the flotilla incident, which had been denounced as a major violation by Israel.
