Trump quotes about Andrew Jackson and the Civil War

He was trying to express that respect Monday (May 1) in a Sirius XM interview with Washington Examiner columnist Salena Zito.

Presidential historian Jon Meacham said Tuesday that President Donald Trump told him a year ago that he could have negotiated a deal to avert the Civil War.

Trump said of Jackson: "He was a very tough person, but he had a big heart". People don't ask that question, but why was there the Civil War? At the time of his death (16 years before the start of the Civil War), Jackson owned approximately 150 people as slaves on his plantation outside of Nashville. "Why could that one not have been worked out?"

Historians of the American Civil War point to complex issues when reflecting on President Donald Trump's remark that the conflict might have been settled without bloodshed. According to Abraham Lincoln's famed second inaugural address, and virtually every high-school curriculum in America, the Civil War occurred after 11 states seceded from the Union over a fundamental disagreement about political control and the role of slavery in the American economy.

Trump also said Jackson, a slaveholder and war hero who led a relocation and extermination campaign against Native Americans, "had a big heart".

Wisconsin-based atheist group sues Trump over church order
Under my administration, free speech does not end at the steps of a cathedral or a synagogue or any other house of worship. The provision is written in the tax code and would require an act of Congress to repeal fully.

Jackson died in 1845, 16 years before the Civil War began.

Reuters then got Trump himself saying he thought being the president "would be easier" as he complained about missing his old life. "SLAVERY. The thing southern states were most concerned about in 1861 was the right to perpetuate slavery".

Historians with more academic experience than Trump have indeed asked this question about the Civil War often. In March he even visited Jackson's tomb in Nashville, Tennessee.

Chelsea and Barbara Lee say the cause was slavery.

Defenders of Trump's creative approach to history argued on Monday that the president was referring to a successful effort by Jackson in the 1830s to put down a secessionist threat.

We haven't got an individual who is outrageously good and we build around". "We've got to try to find players now of that age to fill the squad and players of that ability to improve the group".

That, in short, is why the US Civil War could not be "worked out".

And, as it turns out, Jackson was president during a precursor incident, the Nullification Crisis (see wikipedia as well as a PJ Media article by Tyler O'Neil), in which SC asserted that it nullified federal tariffs that it opposed.

Trump's comments about the war came after he lauded Jackson, the populist president whom he and his staff have cited as a role model. He said, "there's no reason for this.'" However, Trump's tweet retroactively confirms that he meant to say that he believed Jackson "saw [the war] coming" and that he might've prevented it.

Had Jackson been alive at the start of the Civil War, Meacham said, it would be hard to predict his reaction.

Sunday's interview wouldn't be the first time Trump has questioned the reasoning of a deeply rooted conflict.
