Stan Wawrinka beats Mischa Zverev, retains Geneva Open title”

Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori produced a spirited fight back as he bounced back from a set down to book his place in the semi-finals of the Geneva Open last evening.

Top seed Stan Wawrinka defended his Geneva claycourt title on Saturday, rallying for a set down to see off German outsider Mischa Zverev 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Victory against Zverev avenged a defeat when Wawrinka last faced him, at another Swiss tournament in Basel last October.

The French Open gets underway on Sunday.

"I would have hated you if you had beaten me in two tournaments", Wawrinka quipped to his opponent in the post-match ceremonies.

The result meant Zverev fell just short of emulating younger brother Alexander, who claimed the biggest tournament win of his young career at the Masters event in Rome last week. The Russia-born German's second runner-up finish comes more than six years after his first, at Metz, France.

After losing the first set to qualifier Zverev, the older brother of Alexander Zverev who stunned Novak Djokovic in the Rome Masters final, three-time Grand Slam victor Wawrinka needed 2 hours 20 minutes to seal victory.

"It was a great week for me here‎ in Geneva", said Zverev.

She even smirked when the judges' associate revealed one of the jury contestants was, indeed, a magazine editor. Her dreams were shattered when Bauer Media published "grubby articles " that defamed her, he said.

In the second set, both returners had numerous chances against the opposing player's serve but went a combined 0-for-9 on break-point opportunities.

The 32-year-old Wawrinka, who has struggled on clay thus far this season, on Thursday worked out some of the kinks in his game in a confidence-boosting 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Querrey, reports Efe.

In the decider, Wawrinka put constant pressure on Zverev's serve and clinched with a third break.
