An aggressive campaign by Iowa lawmakers to strip Planned Parenthood of much of its public funding will force it to close four clinics serving 15,000 patients, the women's health group said on Thursday.

Planned Parenthood has shut down clinics in New Mexico and Wyoming recently as well. Planned Parenthood has said its sites in Kansas City, Columbia, Joplin and Springfield would provide abortions without the restrictions.

The locations served by those four Planned Parenthood clinics represent both sides of the state, and some of its most densely populated communities. According to the report, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland had served 30 percent of the individuals on Iowa's Medicaid family planning program.

The state will now create its own family planning network so it can prohibit funding to clinics that provide abortions.

Under existing IN law, girls younger than 18 must either get their parents' consent to have an abortion or seek permission from a judge.

Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains official Adrienne Mansanares, speaking to the Casper Star-Tribune, said the organization looked at the services and financial health of the Wyoming clinic.

In response to threats by Donald Trump's administration and Republicans in Congress to cut off federal funding as part of efforts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, Planned Parenthood held their largest benefit in February. Planned Parenthood of the Heartland president and CEO Suzanna de Baca is blaming Republican politicians for the closure, on account of the Iowa Legislature slashing Planned Parenthood's funding across the state. Chris Hall and Rep. Tim Kacena called the closing of the Sioux City clinic "troubling", saying it means almost 5,000 women in the area will "lose access to critical health care services like cancer screenings and birth control". "We are constantly looking at ways to remain effective, and over the years, we realized the need to transition". "We'll be working really closely with our patients to make sure we get them connected to another provider".

A spokesperson from the organization says defunding at the state level has forced the closures, leaving more than 14,000 Iowans without access to certain services.

Yvonne Gutierrez, executive director of Planned Parenthood Texas Votes, said the request for the lost funds "really opens up a huge can of worms that could be very destructive". "Abortion is a direct assault on human life and dignity, and abortion clinics do not provide a wide continuum of medical care".
