North Korea missile test latest”

United Nastions Security Council has strongly condemned North Korea's latest ballistic missile test and vowed to take further measures including sanctions.

In a statement, adopted unanimously, the 15-member council urged the communist nation to show "sincere commitment to denuclearization through concrete action".

The U.S. believes the ballistic missile North Korea launched on Saturday was a KN-17 medium range missile and not a new intermediate range missile, as had been speculated.

China is North Korea's largest trading partner and the closest thing it has to an ally, and experts have long said it has the most leverage over the reclusive state.

Francois Delattre told reporters Monday that France favors "a strong, swift and firm reaction of the council" to North Korea's test on Sunday of a new longer-range ballistic missile, which he called "a serious threat to peace and security both in the region and the world".

Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada told reporters Sunday that the missile launched Saturday reached an unprecedented altitude of 2,000 kilometers, or nearly 1,250 miles, which led to speculation that North Korea had developed a new intermediate-range missile. And Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada suggested that it might be a new type of missile altogether, noting that it reached an altitude of 2,000 km (1,240 miles) and remained in the air for 30 minutes.

Monday's claim, if confirmed, would mark another big advance toward the North's goal of fielding a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the USA mainland.

"So if their ICBM has three stages and this is a single-stage missile, maybe we're watching the North Koreans test the first stage of what will be a multiple-stage ICBM".

There are doubts whether Pyongyang can miniaturise a nuclear weapon sufficiently to fit it onto a missile nose cone, and no proof it has mastered the re-entry technology needed to ensure it survives returning into Earth's atmosphere.

Experts have cast doubt on that claim, though they say the test still represented a significant step forward for Pyongyang's goal of developing an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of hitting the USA mainland.

The test is also an immediate challenge to South Korea's new president, Moon Jae-in, who expressed a desire to reach out to the North.

The country's official Korean Central News Agency said the test firing of the new ground-to-ground strategic ballistic missile "Hwasong-12" was successful.

Asked if North Korea's missile programme was developing faster than the South had expected, he said: "Yes". "This could also be an opportunity for China to show that it can initiate some plausible plans to handle the North Korea issue within the framework of the worldwide community", Su added.
