Officers found Sterling on the second floor and immediately took control of him as Sterling resisted the officers.

Because of the reduced numbers of entrances and intensified screening process, the Phoenix Police Department said attendees should be prepared for long lines. However, this did not seem to occur on Thursday, with the armed man slipping through into the convention while fully armed.

Prop weapons carried into the four-day event are supposed to be inspected by security staff, but police say the man's weapons weren't checked. They have stated that what happened when he brought four guns and several knives to the annual event is "an isolated incident".
