Local church weighs pros and cons of religious freedom order

Trump's executive order instructs the Internal Revenue Service to "not take any adverse action against any individual, house of worship, or other religious organization" that endorse or oppose candidates from the pulpit, which is now outlawed by a provision typically referred to as the Johnson Amendment.

But pastors are already free to deliver political speeches, and regularly do.

The order also asks government agencies to make allowances for organizations that don't want to cover birth control in employee health plans.

A spokesperson for the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa told KCCI, "President Trump's executive order is risky and ill-advised for the government's interest and for houses of worship".

"IT ALLOWS FOLKS TO DISCRIMINATE AND BASICALLY JUST SAY, WELL THAT'S MY RELIGIOUS BELIEF SO I GET TO TREAT PEOPLE BADLY" ButMinister David Sickelka, thinkit could only create more problems, and discrimination.

Wisconsin-based atheist group sues Trump over church order
Under my administration, free speech does not end at the steps of a cathedral or a synagogue or any other house of worship. The provision is written in the tax code and would require an act of Congress to repeal fully.

The ACLU said that while it has chosen not to sue the Trump administration right now, it will sue his administration if the order triggers any future government action.

"We will not allow people of faith to be targeted, bullied or silenced anymore", Trump said. "And once again this administration has taken another step down a unsafe slippery slope, undermining safeguards against discrimination and the intrusion of partisan politics into our faith communities and other aspects of civic life created to serve the needs of all of the American public".

Religious discrimination is barred by the US Constitution. The amendment, originally a part of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954, prevents all 501 (c)(3) non-profit organizations from advocating for political candidates.

In reality, however, the order does not indicate a dramatic change of policy.

However, the new order does not provide any major concessions to religious entities despite the role that conservatives played in getting Trump elected president in the 2016 election.

They also persuaded her to draft a series of tweets asserting that the president's health was not as bad as perceived. In an apparent attempt to reduce pressure on themselves, the cabal last week allowed Mr.

Although Trump's order doesn't go as far as some feared, it still is troubling.

The order released Thursday instead included a blanket statement that "it shall be the policy of the executive branch to vigorously enforce Federal law's robust protections for religious freedom".

"America has a rich tradition of social change beginning in our pews and our pulpits", Trump said in front of an audience of religious leaders Thursday.

Even the scaled-back version prompted threats of lawsuits, although some groups said that after reviewing the order they would hold fire on any legal action, arguing that it will have little impact.

President Trump mentioned on numerous occasions during his campaign that he would repeal the amendment.

The logic reflects concerns that a premature withdrawal from Iraq at the end of 2011, initiated by President George W. Iraqi army soldiers took over Mosul's airport, providing them a gateway to the western part of the city.

He said in February he would "totally destroy" the amendment.
