Israelis were "shocked" after Trump's White House waffled on the Western Wall

Israelis were

Wading into an ongoing diplomatic spat between Israel and the U.S. over whether the Western Wall is in Israel, White House spokesman Sean Spicer brought his own brand of clarity to the situation, affirming that the holy site is "clearly in Jerusalem".

A senior member of the USA delegation helping to prepare President Donald Trump's visit to Israel next week denied a request that would have allowed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit the Western Wall alongside Trump, saying that "it's not your territory".

The American reportedly shot back "no" because this is "not your territory" and said it is part of the West Bank, sparking a shouting match between the Israeli and American teams.

A senior Israeli official in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office confirmed to ABC News that Israel has asked the United States to clarify its position on the Western Wall after a "senior member of the USA delegation" prepping for Trump's upcoming visit told his Israeli counterparts that the Western Wall is "not your territory".

"McMaster was asked twice by reporters whether the Western Wall is in Israel".

Although Trump's pledge to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, made during the presidential election campaign, could be on hold, US officials have hinted that he might make some other gesture to show Washington's new thinking on the city's status.

The rival claims to Jerusalem lie at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and no countries now have their embassies in occupied Jerusalem, instead basing them in Israel's commercial capital Tel Aviv.

"They do not reflect the us position, and certainly not the President's position", a White House spokesman said. David Friedman was greeted by Israel's President Reuven Rivlin.

Netanyahu said that "not only would moving the embassy not harm the peace process, but to the contrary".

Press Secretary Sean Spicer added to the confusion Tuesday, saying, "The Western Wall is one of holiest sites in the Jewish faith, and obviously in Jerusalem", when asked if the site was in Israel.

Trump will be the first sitting president to pay a visit to the Wailing Wall, located in Jerusalem's Old City, captured by Israel in 1967.

The status of sovereignty over the wall became a political issue between the USA and Israel earlier this week.

So I told you this weekend about Secretary of State Tillerson making the comment that moving the USA embassy to Jerusalem would depend on a peace deal between Palestine and Israel - something we know isn't just going to happen.

After his arrival in Tel Aviv on Monday, Friedman visited the Western Wall in occupied East Jerusalem, praying there and kissing the sacred site.

He continued, "Serving the USA as its Ambassador to the State of Israel, is the greatest honor of my life, and I pledge to you to do all that I can to strengthen and enhance the relations between our two great nations - that you accurately described as unbreakable and, I would add, without limits". Trump, however, has vowed to break with that policy by moving the United States embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. He was going to be all-Israel all the time.
