ICE announces major anti-gang operation, mostly U.S. citizens arrested

Immigration and Customs Enforcement's investigative division arrested 1,378 people after a six-week long, national gang operation that concluded this week.

A total of 1,378 people were arrested during what the agency called the Homeland Security Investigations' largest gang surge to date.

Of the 1,378 people arrested, 1,095 belonged to, or were affiliated with, gangs including the Bloods, the SureƱos, the Crips and MS-13. Those granted DACA and found to pose a threat to national security or public safety may have their deferred action terminated at any time, and the Department of Homeland Security may seek to deport them.

The operation targeted gang members and their associates in cases on "transnational criminal activity", including suspected drug traffickers, weapons smugglers, sex traffickers, and murder and racketeering suspects, officials said.

The Atlanta field office, which covers Georgia and the Carolinas, arrested 116 total gang members; 114 of them being convicted criminals.

"This latest operation clearly shows our collective resolve to attack and dismantle the street gangs that are threatening our communities", said Steve Francis, acting special agent in charge of HSI Detroit.

The confirmed gang members admitted membership in a gang.

Of those arrested 933 were USA citizens and 445 were foreign nationals, authorities said.

In February, ICE said enforcement actions then were planned before Trump's executive orders on illegal immigration.

"The success of this operation is directly attributed to the ongoing collaboration with our federal, state and local law enforcement partners", Brown continued in the press release. We develop target packages and go out and arrest gang members for various different violations of law.

Of the 17 arrests made in the D.C. region, 13 were MS-13 gang members while 16 MS-13 gang members were arrested in the Baltimore area.

News of ICE's operation came after Attorney General Jeff Sessions threatened to disrupt gang activity.
