Hyundai, Kia ordered to recall 240000 cars over safety concerns”

Automakers' reputations to be tarnished after government ordered-measure In the end, a mandatory recall order was given to Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors, which had resisted the recall recommended by South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The recall was brought about by the actions of a whistle-blowing engineer who worked for Hyundai, Kim Gwang-ho. This was the first time the South Korean government has forced a local automaker to issue a recall, instead of the automaker undertaking the recall voluntarily.

Hyundai and Kia, which had previously argued that the flaws presented no danger to driving safety, said in a joint statement on Friday they would cede to the order.

The affected models include Hyundai's i-30 hatchback, the Sonata sedan, the Genesis and Kia's Mohave and Carnival minivan.

"Safety is always Hyundai-Kia's number one priority", it said. Meanwhile, the ministry also requested Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office to investigate the possibility that the two automakers' attempted to cover up the defects.

The companies submitted arguments which were heard May 8 by independent arbitrators not affiliated with the ministry or with Hyundai or Kia.

In response to the recall order, Hyundai and Kia said in a joint statement that they accept the decision and will take all necessary steps to fix or replace the faulty parts in the affected models as early as possible.

It is generally believed Kim also complained to NHTSA, the USA auto-safety regulator, which ordered a massive recall of 1.2 million vehicles in the US and Canada that were equipped with Theta II engines.

Instead of maybe gradually building it up again, I hit balls for four or five hours on Friday and did the same on Saturday.
