Explosion Rocks Damascus Airport

Damascus International Airport is reportedly a major conduit of Iranian arms bound for Hezbollah in Syria.

A huge explosion shook Damascus in what state media said was an Israeli missile strike on a military installation near the Syrian capital's global airport.

Commenting on the reports, Israeli Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz said that the strike was compatible with Israel's policy of targeting streams of Lebanon-based Hezbollah's Iranian arms deliveries through Syria.

Syria's regime is allies with both Hezbollah and Iran, and Israel says Iran is using that connection to funnel weapons and resources to Hezbollah.

ATS sources said Aftab had gathered information on several army cantonment areas and defence establishments in the state. He had allegedly provided information about the army's movements and units in Faizabad, Lucknow and Amritsar.

The state's intelligence minister, Israel Katz, confirmed that such a raid would comply with government policy. It was the most serious clash between the two countries since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war six years ago and the first time Israel took responsibility for an attack in Syria.

"The Syrian army and its allies will work to thwart the new Israeli plot on the occupied Golan border and will continue to destroy the enemy's collaborators", a Syrian military source said to Lebanese news site el-Nashra, claiming the missiles had destroyed fuel tanks.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also declared in late March, "When we identify attempts to transfer advanced weapons to Hezbollah and we have intelligence and it is operationally feasible, we act to prevent it".

Hezbollah's Al-Manar television said the explosion was "probably" caused by an Israeli air strike.

Israel appears to be striking at military convoys and installations in Syria at a quickening pace, maintaining it has the right to prevent the transfer of weapons to Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group that fights alongside Syrian government forces.

The Kremlin strongly criticised Israeli air strikes on targets inside Syria on Thursday, saying Israel and other countries should avoid any action that heightened tension in the region.

Five airstrikes hit the site, leading to explosions and a fire.
