DeepMind's AlphaGo versus Ke Jie

DeepMind's AlphaGo versus Ke Jie”

AlphaGo beat Chinese champion Ke Jie in the first of three games at the Future of Go Summit, organized by Google, the Chinese government and others.

"Ke Jie is using the ideas AlphaGo used in the master series of online games in January against AlphaGo", Hassabis tweeted.

Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google and the executive chairman of Alphabet, Google's parent company, has flown in for the event, as has David Silver, the lead programmer on AlphaGo, and Mustafa Suleyman, another one of the DeepMind founders. A two-person strategy game on a 19 X 19 grid board with black and white stones, weiqi is the most complex contest played by humans, with more possible moves than the total number of estimated atoms in the visible universe.

Also like a god, AlphaGo has been demonstrating its influence far and wide among the game's top players - including Ke, who Wired notes adopted some tactics from AlphaGo. Another Friday exhibition match will pit AlphaGo against five top players, all working together to defeat it.

Ke, who has been the top-ranked player in the 3,000-year-old game for more than two years and has previously described himself as a "pretentious", boldly said last year "Bring it on!" and vowed never to lose to a machine.

The three-game match between Ke and AlphaGo, which will be held on May 23, 25 and 27, is part of a five-day Go summit sponsored by Google, the Chinese Go Association, and Sports Bureau of Zhejiang Province.

AlphaGo, which made history when it beat a top South Korean professional player previous year, will go up against Ke Jie in two more matches slated for Thursday and Saturday this week.

If the algorithm wins a second game, it will be the second time it has stolen the Go crown from a human opponent.

Google's absence from China - a country it initially withdrew from amid fears of censorship and cyber-attacks - remains the biggest gap in its dominance of global search and video.

See, when AlphaGo played South Korean master Lee Sedol past year, the A.I. This week you can expect to hear DeepMind speak about its health initiatives, and Google should go into further detail about how machine learning is already improving many of its products. In the pair Go match, Chinese Go player Gu Li will compete with the other player Lian Xiao on May 26, with each pairing up with his AlphaGo teammate.
