Daydream 2.0 Solves One Of VR's Biggest Problems: Isolation

Daydream 2.0 Solves One Of VR's Biggest Problems: Isolation”

The virtual reality platform, introduced past year, will now support a new line of standalone headsets that do not require a PC or smartphone connection to run. The best VR devices on the market are usually either tethered to a PC, like HTC Vive, or require a smartphone to be inserted into the device such as Samsung Gear VR or any of the Google Cardboard headsets. The technology is called WorldSense and is based on an expanded form of Google's existing Daydream platform. Key to the design is what Google calls "World Sense", which means the headsets can monitor the environment and accurately track your position without the need for extra sensors. This is according to Google's VR team, though the team does note that they won't have any say in the final cost, and the price point could change depending on what hardware is used to build the headsets. Today's announcement advances the work that Qualcomm and Google had previously collaborated on to enable Daydream on smartphone devices.

Nothing can snap you out of an immersive virtual reality (VR) experience faster than tripping over a cord, which is why VR companies have been scrambling to develop wireless systems. While it has largely tried to deliver on the content bit, the devices have been lacking, mostly.

All the new features are coming later this year. Well, these upcoming headsets are said to come equipped with state of the art positional tracking which will allow the hardware to gauge the headset's position with respect to the space around it. "VR can transport you".
