Australian PM "actively considering" North Atlantic Treaty Organisation request for additional troops in Afghanistan

Australian PM

Prime Minister Turnbull revealed North Atlantic Treaty Organisation had asked him to consider sending more troops to Afghanistan during his Anzac Day visit earlier this year.

Stoltenberg, who said that a decision on NATO's presence in Afghanistan was due "within weeks", stated that the alliance was not mulling over a return to combat missions in Afghanistan, but would focus on "train, assist and advise" missions.

At least 17 people were wounded in a suicide-bomb attack on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops as their truck convoy passed down the main road running between Kabul's airport and the USA embassy, police and health ministry officials said.

"We have a lot invested in that Afghan operation so I imagine the Turnbull government would be looking at [the request] pretty favourably", he said.

The outlet said 42 Australians have lost their lives in Afghanistan since 2001.

Earlier this week, after a lengthy review, top Trump administration advisers were reported to be urging an ambitious new military role in Afghanistan, led by the Pentagon, with at least 3,000 troops added to the current 8,400, to halt the country's deteriorating security and push the Taliban back to the negotiating table.

The approximate number of men and women now serving as part of an worldwide coalition to combat the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The request followed Mr Turnbull's recent trip to the region, where he met with US Secretary of Defense James Mattis and General John Nicholson, the commander of allied forces in Afghanistan.

Merkel is running for a fourth term in September national elections, with many Germans wary of military deployments given the country's militaristic and nationalistic past.

Reuters reported in late April that Trump's administration was carrying out a review of Afghanistan and conversations are revolving around sending between 3,000 and 5,000 us and coalition troops to Afghanistan. Since 2002, 42 Australian troops have been killed in Afghanistan and two in Iraq.

A new plan would expand the United States military role and seek to force the Taliban back to the negotiating table, The Washington Post reported this week.

And how does the new approach address the problem of the Russians and Iranians, who, by some reporting, are involved in Afghanistan, including allegedly backing our main adversary, the Taliban?

"What we promised was to stop the cuts, gradually increase and then move towards 2 percent", Stoltenberg said. "And, actually, Germany and numerous European allies have started to do exactly that", he added. "I think we'd probably want to do it".

That new beefing-up of efforts would include sending USA and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation advisers at brigade and battalion level to help Afghan commanders coordinate troop movements with artillery, intelligence or close air support, he said. It is believed that the U.S will send in between 3,000 and 5,000 additional soldiers while other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member countries are also in the process of reviewing their troop levels.
