UBS moves risk platform to Microsoft Azure cloud

Microsoft said revenue from its "Intelligent Cloud" rose 11 percent from a year earlier to $6.8 billion.

Net profit rose 28 percent to $4.8 billion while revenues edged up eight percent to $22.1 billion in the quarter ending March 31, Microsoft said.

It was another strong quarter for Microsoft's Office consumer business too, with Office products and cloud services revenue up by 15% (14% CC).

This was the first full quarter in which Microsoft included results from LinkedIn Corp., the professional social network it acquired in December for $27 billion.

Trump tweets don't help: 1st Twitter revenue drop since IPO
Twitter posted GAAP losses of 9 cents per share or $62 million, compared to last year's loss of 12 cents per share or $80 million. The company also introduced an update that makes it easier for users to follow conversations and replies in late March.

The reason was a shortfall in the company's More Personal Computing segment, which includes Windows and hardware like the Surface tablets, booked $8.84 billion in revenue - well behind average expectations of $9.22 billion (according to StreetAccount), and down 7% from past year.

In a statement, CEO Satya Nadella touted momentum in the cloud business.

The software giant reported third quarter earnings of $4.8 billion, or 61 cents a share, on revenue of $22.1 billion. Analysts expected earnings of 70 cents per share on $23.62 billion in revenue, according to Thomson Reuters consensus estimates.

Revenue of $23.6 billion, versus $23.62 expected.

China launches 1st domestically-made aircraft carrier
China's aim is to defend its trade, access to natural resources, and build a buffer against perceived U.S. encroachment. Yesterday China celebrated the 68 anniversary of its navy establishment.

Since launching the Surface line, Microsoft's own devices have made up an increasingly important part of the company's revenue (though revenue from phones, of course, has been tanking for a few quarters now and continues to do so). Microsoft now has 26.2 million Office 365 consumer subscribers.

Windows commercial products and cloud services were up by 6% (6% CC), following similar growth last quarter. "With Microsoft Azure, we are building on the industry's leading cloud platform in terms of innovation, technology, security and regulatory compliance, which is very important as a Swiss financial institution". The expectation here was that LinkedIn would contribute about $950 million to Microsoft's productivity and business processes segment and those numbers for LinkedIn came in a bit higher at $975 million.

Microsoft has just reported its earnings for Q3 2017 (fiscal year).

The business includes Windows software, Xbox gaming consoles, online search advertising and Surface personal computers.
