Some studies have shown distracted driving reduces reaction time even more than driving while intoxicated, not that doing either is a good idea.

The week of April 3-9, 2017, is California Teen Safe Driver Week and in conjunction with the National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, safety presentations will be held at various high schools and venues throughout the state to teach teens the reality and consequences of distracted driving. Seat belts are your best defense against a distracted driver. AT&T also has it's own "IT CAN WAIT" initiative, where drivers make a pledge to never drive while distracted. The number of distracted drivers involved crashes in Oklahoma increased from 7,470 in 2014 to 8,012 in 2015, the previous year for which statistics are available. The goal is to gain voluntary compliance by drivers, but sometimes citations are necessary for motorists to better understand the importance of driving distraction free. "Distracted driving is very hard sometimes for the officers to know for sure if they were distracted, and so they can't really put it on the crash report unless they know that". That total includes 26 fatal crashes.

The campaign aims to end distracted driving through education and raise awareness about the associated dangers.
