N. Korea marks military anniversary with firing drill

North Korea has detained a US citizen, officials said, bringing to three the number of Americans now being held there.

In a separate statement, the South Korean President's Office said a meeting had been held to discuss the situation.

North Korea marked its most recent holiday, the 105th anniversary of the birth of North Korean founder Kim Il Sung, on April 15 with a massive military parade, a video featuring a simulated nuclear strike on an American city, and a missile test.

The North's Rodong Sinmun - the official mouthpiece of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea - warned Tuesday of dire consequences in the event of a US-led pre-emptive strike.

South Korea's Defense Ministry has stated that the North appears prepared to conduct "strategic provocations" at any time. Hyeon Soo Lim, a South Korean-born Canadian citizen in his 60s, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison in 2015 on charges of trying to use religion to destroy the North Korean system and helping USA and South Korean authorities lure and abduct North Korean citizens.

North Korea warned that the United States will have to choose between political and military surrender, according to the Yonhap report.

The North has also tested multiple high-thrust rocket engines, potentially for an intercontinental ballistic missile, and there has been a lot of activity around the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, leading some observers to conclude that North Korea will soon conduct a sixth nuclear test in the near future.

"This is a real threat to the world, whether we want to talk about it or not", Trump said at a lunch for ambassadors of countries who sit on the Security Council.

A guided-missile submarine, it can carry up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles and is able to stealthily deploy up to 66 Navy SEALs or other special operations troops.

More provocations may come as the North celebrates the founding of the military.

As of Monday morning, North Korea's official media had not reported on the detention.
