'Kerala has 14 colleges in India's top 100 rankings'

Delhi's Miranda College was ranked the best college in the country, with Loyola College, Chennai, and Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi, in the second and third positions. Following is the list of the colleges that made the Top 100. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras came in a close second.

The University of Hyderabad, which hit the headlines in 2016 over the suicide of its PhD student Rohith Vemula, has been ranked seventh in the lists of universities. "Another institution that saw students" protest for a long time following the death of Dalit student Rohith Vemula has slipped from 4th rank a year ago to sixth.

The list announced by HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar here today has been prepared on basis of a survey of "general degree" colleges under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). From now on, the grants/funds to institutes will based on their rankings as per NIRF. The institutions were assigned points based on their performances in Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RPC), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), Perception and these parameters had a weightage of 30, 30, 20, 10, 10 percentage respectively. The NIRF was launched in September 2015.

The rankings were divided into five categories:colleges, universities, pharmacy, engineering, management and overall. IIM-Ahmedabad and IIM-Bangalore have switched positions in the top management institute list.

"The very culture and ethos of the place has ensured that the institute is qualitatively enhanced, and that has led to IISc emerging and staying at the top", he said.
