Due to the clashes, the traffic movement on Maulana Azad Road was halted, causing traffic jams in the city centre.

Girls from a women's college in Srinagar also joined the protests as police battled hard to bring the situation under control.

A petrol bomb was hurled at a CRPF party in Rainawari area at Srinagar but no one was hurt, police said.

According to reports, a group of students clashed with police after they were asked to stop a protest rally. The cops in retaliation fired tear smoke shells to disperse them. "In the resultant chaos, some students received minor injuries and a lot of them were discharged after first aid", the statement said.

After the day students' protests, the government ordered closure of all universities, colleges and higher secondary schools in Kashmir tomorrow.
