Gibraltar outraged that Spain has veto power over its future

Gibraltar outraged that Spain has veto power over its futureā€

The EU's insistence that the new arrangements won't apply to Gibraltar unless Spain agrees to it is a tacit admission from Brussels that different territories of the United Kingdom can have different deals.

The Government has launched a concerted effort to reassure Gibraltar that the United Kingdom will stand up for the British overseas territory during the Brexit negotiations.

Downing Street said May had made clear the Government was "absolutely steadfast in our support of Gibraltar, its people and its economy" in the House of Commons on Wednesday. "Brexit is already complicated enough without Spain trying to complicate it further".

Spain must have a say over whether any post-Brexit deal applies to Gibraltar, the European Union said Friday, a move welcomed by Madrid which is engaged in a bitter sovereignty row with London over the British territory.

The Independent and Telegraph carried the Foreign Secretary's statement on Saturday, where he said "as ever, the United Kingdom remains implacable and rock-like in our support for Gibraltar".

White House invites lawmakers to see intelligence material
They spoke only on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the internal matter. It is unclear if they are the same as those viewed by Nunes.

An EU source told the BBC the inclusion of the Gibraltar issue in the document had come after lobbying from Spain.

In 2002 a referendum which would have given Spain and Britain shared control of the region was rejected by nearly 99% of the population. And that's been an annoyance for Spain, which has its own territorial claim on the region.

This unnecessary, unjustified and unacceptable discriminatory proposed singling out of Gibraltar and its people was the predictable machination of Spain that the people of Gibraltar foresaw and one of the reasons why we voted so massively to remain in the EU. "We have been firm in our commitment never to enter arrangements under which the people of Gibraltar would pass under the sovereignty of another state against their wishes, nor to enter into a process of sovereignty negotiations with which Gibraltar is not content", she told MPs.

While Scotland isn't Gibraltar, and we are a nation not a territory, there is no doubt that the notion that all parts of Britain must have one deal is undermined by the EU's position.

Fox, who represents Gibraltar in the European Parliament, accused the institution's Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt (ALDE) of appeasing Spain by excluding references to Gibraltar from the institution's draft resolution, in contrast with pro-Remain Scotland and Northern Ireland.

After Match Play, can anyone beat Dustin Johnson?
Those answers could be construed as elusive rhetoric from any other player, but in Johnson's case, it's just the plain truth. At the 16th Rahm brilliantly holed from 31ft, meaning Johnson was suddenly only one hole ahead with two to play.

Looking after the Union Brussels officials have been quoted as saying the EU is standing up for the interests of its members.

The border, trade deals with the UK, Gibraltar being part of trade deals Britain hammers out with third parties and maintaining freedom of movement are among the key concerns.

Accusing Madrid of seeking to "mortgage the future relationship between the European Union and Gibraltar to its usual obsession with our homeland", Picardo said: "The whole world and the whole European Union should know: this changes nothing in respect of our continued, exclusive British sovereignty". Spain must approve the applicability of a future agreement to territory of Gibraltar.

Gibraltar's government has ruled out any dilution of sovereignty in return for continued access to the European single market or other benefits attached to EU membership. The move is a boost to the Spanish, who have historically tried to regain control over the territory.

"Spain might like to use Gibraltar as a political pawn".
