April The Giraffe Close To Giving Birth Blog Posts

For the last few days, the long-neck beauty was only picking at her grain and hay, hardly eating it. Monday night, vets said that April's appetite remained "off", with the mom-to-be skipping most of her usual favorites, except for a carrot treat.

On Friday, a weekend birth seemed like a sure thing, with her keepers posting, "All observations, behavior, and predictions suggest a calf today, tonight - we would be shocked to get through the weekend without our newest addition".

This is Animal Adventure's first giraffe calf.

So for those serious giraffe lovers out there, Footwear News has rounded up a selection of themed sockwear - the ideal thing to wear while you're up until the wee hours of the night, glued to your computer screen watching April on YouTube.

When April goes into active labor, the baby's front hoofs will be the first to come out, followed by the snout, the zoo says. Following that initial phase of birth, one hour to an hour and a half of labor continues, with the knees and heads coming next.

While there have been some movement and many updates, April the giraffe remains one big, pregnant tease.

It eventually dropped to the ground while onlookers gasped. But don't stress, because Dean commented that the pen appears to be carefully padded to cushion the baby's fall. Once the calf begins to show, it should be out in under an hour. After about 10 hours, baby giraffes should be able to run and keep up the herd.
