And Tillerson said "steps are underway" to organize a coalition to remove him from power. There was little doubt the missile strikes would be seen in Pyongyang as a message.

"They have been doing so many test launches last year and this year to develop systems to transport nuclear warheads", said Kim Dong-yub, a professor at Kyungnam University's Institute of Far Eastern Studies in Seoul. Hagiuda said that given the Trump-Xi meeting, the Japanese and US leaders discussed how Japan, the United States, South Korea and China should deal with North Korea while working with one another.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson confirmed the launch but said in a statement "the United States has spoken enough about North Korea".

The comments were made by a Foreign Ministry official and carried by North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency on Sunday.

North Korea has vowed to bolster its defenses to protect itself against airstrikes like the ones President Donald Trump ordered against an air base in Syria. Perhaps he told North Korea's ally it would be a good idea for their little despot to take a hike for the duration.

The strike group has participated in numerous exercises with Japan and the South Korea and conducted routine patrol operations in the South China Sea since its January 5 deployment from San Diego, California, the Navy statement said.
