South Korean President Park Geun-hye Removed From Office

South Korean President Park Geun-hye Removed From Officeā€¯

South Korea's president was ejected from office by the country's Constitutional Court on Friday, following her impeachment and suspension over accusations that she helped a friend win bribes from Samsung 005930, -0.20% and other South Korean conglomerates.

South Korea's recently impeached president Park Geun-hye maintained her silence Saturday, remaining inside the presidential palace while rival protests continued in the streets.

The accident contributed to lawmakers' decision to impeach Park in December previous year.

She also loses her presidential immunity and can be prosecuted.

Ousted South Korean leader Park Geun-hye is keeping her silence as calls grow for her arrest.

She took office as the 18th president four years ago, after winning over a majority of vote in the December 2012 presidential election. Liberal Moon Jae-in, who lost to Park in the 2012 election, now enjoys a comfortable lead in opinion surveys.

The Constitutional Court ruling on Friday to uphold a parliamentary vote to impeach Park infuriated hundreds of her supporters, two of whom were killed as they tried to break through police lines outside the court.

Feb 25, 2013: Park is sworn in as the first female president of South Korea, promising an era of hope. Park allegedly worked with her to extort millions from businesses; a more sensational version has the now-former president essentially under the control of that friend, who is the daughter of a cult leader.

For months, Ms Park has been caught in the midst of a corruption scandal, and now could face criminal charges.

The prosecution's special investigation unit will look into whether Lee permitted the donations with the intent to induce Park's support - or pressure the government - for a controversial merger previous year between two affiliates, Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries. Questions have also been raised about her influence over key policy decisions. "Her removal means that the curtain is finally drawing on the authoritarian political and economic order that has dominated South Korea for decades,"says Ahn Byong-jin, of the Global Academy for Future Civilizations at Seoul's Kyung Hee University".

The scandal has also led to the heir-apparent of the technology giant Samsung, Lee Jae-yong, being formally indicted on multiple charges including bribery and embezzlement. His trial began on Thursday.
