The state's unemployment rate remains at its lowest level since 2001. This is down just one tenth of a percent from January 2016 at 4.9 percent.

January unemployment rates increased compared to the same month previous year for Jefferson and Lewis counties, but remained relatively flat in St. Lawrence County. Among cities, the Birmingham suburb of Vestavia Hills had the lowest unemployment at 4.2 percent compared to 11.9 percent in the Mobile suburb of Prichard, which was worst.

The U.S. unemployment rate is 4.8 percent for January 2017.

Year-over-year industry information is not available until April due to benchmarking, an annual process of re-estimating statistics as more complete data become available, the report said.
