Google boycotts expose flaws of digital ads

While there are some failsafes in place to keep advertisements from appearing alongside offensive content, Google's Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler wrote in a blog post that the company would hire "significant numbers" of employees to review YouTube videos and mark them as inappropriate for ads. The Google Display Network and DoubleClick Ad Exchange can each place ads across more than two million websites, and even more individual articles and webpages.

While the United Kingdom government noted its advertising freeze was temporary "pending reassurances from Google that government messages can be delivered in a safe and appropriate way", other advertisers were highly critical of the company for not better policing its products.

Advertisers including AT&T, Verizon, Johnson & Johnson, GSK and Enterprise Holdings said this week they would halt all ad spending on Google except for search ads.

Rowland said that the authorities are nowhere near finding a good lead that might help them track down Tad Cummins and his victim. He is a former teacher and is now facing charges for aggravated kidnapping and having sexual contact with Thomas at school.

Companies such as Marks & Spencer, McDonald's and Tesco have already withdrawn advertising from YouTube in the United Kingdom due to their ads being placed within extremist YouTube videos. "A dearth of trust and a need for verification lie at the heart of these problems", he said. "We take this matter very seriously and will continue to take every measure to ensure our brand advertising is consistent with our brand values".

An anti-Semitic clip claiming the existence of a "Jewish World Order" was featured alongside advertisements in Germany from insurer AXA, oil company Total in France, Range Rover vehicles in South Africa, footwear retailer Skopunkten and website Tradera in Sweden, Bloomberg searches of YouTube from each country found on Thursday. "The intention of these policies is to prohibit ads from appearing on pages or videos with hate speech, gory or offensive content".

"But we also have a responsibility to our advertisers who help these publishers and creators thrive". Similarly a 2% decrease would affect only 0.3% of the company's overall revenues.

Belgacem's plans were unclear, Molins said, adding that an investigation is meant to determine whether he acted as a "lone wolf". It is thought the Frenchman, who had previously served 15 years in jail for robbery and drug crimes was radicalised in prison.

Google, the primary revenue driver for Alphabet Inc., announced plans to change its advertising policies after several major brands pulled ads from the platform because they appeared alongside offensive content, such as videos promoting terrorism or anti-Semitism.

"I wanted to share that we've already begun ramping up changes around three areas: our ad policies, our enforcement of these policies and new controls for advertisers", he continued. The latest move came on the back of a number of advertisers in the European Union started boycotting YouTube since last week.

While YouTube revenue is not reported separately, analysts say the video site brings in billions of dollars a year and that it is among Google's top-growing businesses. It appears these new tools and efforts will make it easier for advertisers to choose the types of content they want their ads to appear on, but it's unclear if they'll truly police YouTube content more effectively than before.
