Germany rejects Trump's claim it owes NATO 'vast sums'

President Donald Trump on Saturday accused Germany of owing "vast sums of money" to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, and said Berlin should pay the United States more for defense, a day after meeting Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Merkel rejected Trump's suggestion that individual European countries should negotiate free trade deals with the United States, rather than under existing EU-US negotiations.

U.S. defence spending - US$679 billion (S$950 billion) in 2016 - accounts for 68 per cent of the total defense budgets of Nato's 28 members.

Merkel said Germany had committed to increasing its military spending to the previously agreed level of two per cent of GDP for NATO's European members.

Nunes also said the committee has asked FBI Director James Comey to return and answer more questions in a closed session. The chairman claimed to have read several dozen reports , but said he did not have them in his possession.

It's a well known fact that Trump has never shied away from a handshake when it comes to greeting global leaders and the "death-grip" memes galore are proof to that, however, German Chancellor Merkel had a sticky moment with the U.S. President as besides not shaking her hand, he barely even made eye contact with her during the customary photo-op.

Trump wrote on Twitter.

"Then taking a jesting note, he turned to Merkel saying, "This past administration, at least we have something in common perhaps", which provoked some laughter in the East Room of the White House, but none from the Chancellor whatsoever". As for the most recent report, Trump said he shouldn't be blamed for quoting a Fox News analyst who had accused British intelligence of helping Obama spy on him.

Trump on Friday pledged to "respect historic institutions" but Bannon, also in the East Room, gave a chuckle as Merkel was asked whether she believed Trump had lied and treated the European Union disrespectfully.

During the press conference, Merkel said "it's much, much better to talk to one another and not about one another, and I think our conversation proved this".

"We need to be fair with each other", Merkel said, saying both countries were expecting "that something good comes out of it for their own people".

The talks aimed to represent a restart of a relationship complicated by Trump's rhetoric on the campaign trail.
